The TEC works with the tertiary education sector to implement the government’s Tertiary Education Strategy 2007 – 2012 (incorporating Statement of Tertiary Education Priorities 2008 – 2010).

One of the TEC’s research funds is the Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF). The primary goal of the PBRF is to ensure that excellent research in the tertiary education sector is encouraged and rewarded. This entails assessing the research performance of tertiary education organisations (TEOs) and then funding them on the basis of their performance.
