About Research & Innovation
The role of Research & Innovation is to provide end-to-end services which facilitate and support all stages of research and innovation development, from initial funding through to commercialisation, where appropriate.
Research & Innovation provides support and assistance to the University's academic staff in their quest for research funding and other support. The unit is the University's liaison with funding bodies, industry and business, and oversees all contracts relating to research, consultancy and commercialisation.

Research funding
We handle all applications to and contracts with research funders,
which includes the contestable funding rounds for New Zealand sources
and overseas funding agencies. It is the University's policy that all
proposals, contracts and variations are handled through the unit, and
this includes both competitive funding rounds and applied research
contracts.
If you are seeking research funding please contact a Research Consultant.
Intellectual Property
Research & Innovation captures and processes intellectual property emerging from the University, taking ideas, inventions, discoveries and technological innovations from basic concepts through to commercial potential.
We develop the pathways required to translate innovations into commercial reality, building bridges between academia and business.

Performance Based Research Fund
Research & Innovation administers the Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF) on the University's behalf. The PBRF Team’s role is to manage the University’s participation in the three PBRF measures: Quality Evaluation, Research Degree Completion, and External Research Income. Specific tasks include: coordinating responses to consultation documents, liaising with the TEC about PBRF issues, identifying staff eligible to participate in the PBRF, assisting research staff to record research information and prepare PBRF portfolios, managing the submission of portfolios during a Quality Evaluation, and overseeing the annual External Research Income and Research Degree Completion data returns. We also advise Colleges, Departments/Schools and University management on research support strategies.
If you have questions regarding the PBRF, please contact Maxine Bryant.
UC SPARK (The UC Research Profile) and the Research Report
Research & Innovation is involved in recording staff research outputs and activity, for compliance and publicity purposes. To this end we maintain and promote the UC SPARK, a website that showcases UC's research excellence, and the Research Report, which is a published compilation of all the research outputs produced by staff over the previous calendar year. The UC Research Report also includes articles highlighting research activity within that period.
To find out more about these publications, please either visit their websites or contact Maxine Bryant.
If you are a member of staff and are seeking research funds, or require information about any of our services, please contact us.
